Job Description
Position: Camp Director for summer 2010

Purpose:

  • To plan and direct the operations of Camp UniStar during the summer season (June-August) 2010.
  • Provide for the welfare and safety of campers and staff.
  • To efficiently manage the business operations of the camp during the summer so that budgets and physical facilities are well maintained.
  • To model the practice of UU principles in conducting Camp affairs.

Responsible to: The chairperson of the UniStar Personnel Committee.

General Responsibilities:

  • Supervises all camp staff
      a. Participates in the selection of staff with Personnel Committee
      b. Assigns work responsibility in a fair and equitable manner and coordinates weekly schedule
      c. Conducts supervisory and performance reviews with staff
      d. Designs and conducts staff training as appropriate and needed
      e. Administers personnel policies and practices set by the Personnel Committee
  • Manages financial operations of the camp during the summer months with guidance and input from Camp Treasurer, as appropriate and needed
  • Coordinates camp activities
      g. Coordinates schedules for adult and children's programs; oversees planning and scheduling of any special program features
     h. Works with the Management Committee to plan, carry-out, evaluate camp events and operations, and to plan use of camp facilities and equipment
  • Ensures high standards for program activities, food service, health and safety
  • Manages healthy relationships with community-based providers of health services, transportation, protection, supplies, utilities and waste disposal
  • Ensures proper implementation of camp emergency procedures (fire, emergency, health and safety)
  • Sees that proper care is taken of camp equipment and facilities, and alerts the proper MC member of any significant repairs that are necessary
  • Acts as host/hostess for the camp
  • Promotes high staff and camper morale
  • Prepares reports on camp operations and activities and makes recommendations for the following season
  • Seeks consultation and assistance from the Management Committee as appropriate and necessary
  • Ensures that the Unistar Staff Handbook is appropriately updated by the end of each summer and maintains a Master Copy

Examples of Specific Responsibilities:

  • Prepares camper fee statements, collects fees, makes deposits.
  • Keeps accurate records of income and expense, pays bills at regular intervals, keeps accurate payroll for staff work records and submits biweekly payment requests to the payroll company.
  • Authorizes purchases that are within budget.
  • Maintains careful petty cash account and records.
  • Prepares correspondence, records and reports.
  • Keeps current inventories of supplies. Handles mechanics of such camp operations as staff and camper transportation to and from the island, registration and lodging of campers (after camp begins) and camp laundry.
  • Answers telephone, sorts and distributes mail to campers and staff.

Qualifications:

  • Be able to select, train and supervise people of many different personalities and skills. Some previous experience preferred.
  • Be able to coordinate and integrate camp operations.
  • Be an effective problem solver.
  • Be flexible and adaptable.
  • Have camp experience.
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Be willing to live in a camp environment and work irregular hours.
  • Knowledge of camp safety issues (first aid, water, food). Lifeguard certification strongly preferred.
  • Responsive to emergency situations in a calm effective manner.
  • Mechanical aptitude, familiarity with boats, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Have sufficient computer skills to accomplish position responsibilities.
  • Welcoming presence with campers and staff.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with the Management Committee and seek assistance from the committee as appropriate.
