General Information
Camp UniStar's mission statement, written decades ago, says that we are a "volunteer-managed camp". Therefore, UniStar is truly a place created and cared for by its own community of campers through time freely given. It could not be in better hands.
While membership in this group has necessarily changed over time, it has been the steadfast guiding hand behind the magic of Camp UniStar for more than 40 years. Campers interact primarily with the director each summer, and they see him or her make the day-to-day decisions to ensure that Camp is running smoothly. However, what campers don't see is the Management Committee putting in thousands of hours each year as stewards working on behalf of our community.
Every decision concerning the nature of Camp is made by this group — from creating a whole new kitchen facility, to hiring the director and staff, to choosing what color to paint the cabins. Because Camp has strong and capable management which is essentially cost-free, we've kept fees very low. As a result of this structure, Camp UniStar has been recognized for decades as the most successful UU camp in the nation.
How the Management Committee Works
Each member commits to serve a three-year term which is renewable. Most stay longer, and a few have given decades of service to UniStar. When openings do occur, they are posted at Camp and on the website. Applicants are accepted through a vote of the whole committee. The Management Committee meets for three or more hours, once a month for eight months of the year. At these meetings subcommittees give reports, and policies, procedures, budgets etc., are created, changed or discarded.

Opening and Closing Camp
In the spring the Management Committee prepares for opening by cleaning, stocking and repairing cabins, mowing grass, planting along the shoreline, preparing the kitchen, getting the dock in the water, readying the boats and motors, etc, etc.
In the fall, Camp is put to bed for the winter. Wet suits are donned and the dock is dragged out of the water onto shore, boats and buoys are stored, cabins are cleaned and closed, creative solutions are found to keep linens and pillows from being shredded by mice. The list goes on . . .
