DESCRIPTION:Stories of Gaa-zagaskwaajimekaag\nProgram Leader: Camille Naslund\nLearn about the history of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe from a tribal historian.  \nWhen Henry Schoolcraft arrived on Star Island in 1836 on a quest to “discover” the source of the Mississippi River\, it was home to a vibrant Ojibwe village. Ojibwe speaker\, teacher and tribal historian Camille Naslund will share highlights from her ongoing research about the history of the Leech Lake band. Topics she will address include local Ojibwe chiefs\, clans\, stories about Windigo and other spirits\, early white explorers and their contacts with natives living here\, and the construction and impacts of the first dams built on the Mississippi headwaters. We do not expect to be able to offer programs for children and youth during this week. \nDr. Naslund is an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Reservation and the Director of the Niigaane Ojibwe Language Immersion Program at the Bugonaygeshig School.  She is writing a book on Leech Lake history. Her working title is “Giiwenh\, So the Story Goes.”

DESCRIPTION:Brush\, Ink\, Paper: Nature Painting and Calligraphy\nProgram Leader:  Marnie Peichel \nLearn the art of Asian painting and calligraphy with ink and brush. \nThe Japanese word “Sumi” means “black ink” and “e” refers to painting. The art of Sumi-e uses plain or diluted ink to achieve shades of black to gray\, using special brushes and rice paper. Join Marnie Peichel to try your hand at painting and calligraphy using Sumi-e ink on rice paper.  Marnie will start each day with a short demo and background on the art style and then campers will paint different subjects or do calligraphy.  Sometimes we’ll experiment with traditional Chinese or Japanese topics (bamboo\, mountains/trees\, plum blossoms)\, and other times we’ll take inspiration from around Camp UniStar. \nMarnie Peichel is an architect focusing on affordable housing who squeezes in art and weaving whenever she can.  She has traveled to China three times and has worked with a teacher of Sumi-e style painting since 2015. Marnie has had her art pieces accepted into the national Sumi-e Society of America show in five different years and has won two awards.  In 2024 she had a piece selected for exhibit in the Fine Arts Building at the Minnesota State Fair!

All required materials will be provided; participants have the option to bring clothing or other textiles to camp to adorn with beadwork or embroidery. \nErin Boe is a children’s illustrator and high school art teacher at Maple Grove Senior High. She was recently named the 2024-25 Minnesota Art Educator of the Year for creating “Unified Art\,” a class offered through Special Olympics that pairs students of all ability levels to create collaborative artwork.

DESCRIPTION:Scandi Light and Dark: Music\, Dance\, Painting and Fiction\nProgram Leaders: Sarah Pradt\, Renee Vaughan\, Demi Miller\nExperience the balance of light and shadow through Scandinavian art\, dance\, music\, and literature.  \nThe visual folk arts of Scandinavia are familiar to many: red Dala horses\, swirling decorative painting\, geometric textile designs\, and nature motifs on sweaters\, hats\, and mittens. Just as long summer nights balance out long dark winter\, Scandinavian music and folk arts beautifully balance light and dark\, joy and melancholy. Through exploration of Nordic music\, dance\, crafts\, and fiction we will experience and share the richness of Scandinavian celebrations of the balance of light and shadow. \nSarah Pradt and Renee Vaughan are both folk musicians specializing in Scandinavian music. Together with master dance teacher Demi Miller\, they will present some of the core dance styles and rhythms in Scandinavian folk music. Renee is also an accomplished Dalmålning painter and teacher who will guide us in using this and other Scandinavian styles and motifs to create art about a UniStar experience. We also will read a short work of Scandinavian fiction and watch a film to inform discussion of ‘Nordic Noir’ and other aspects of contemporary Scandinavian life. Bring your instruments and Scandinavian book suggestions. Art materials will be supplied.

DESCRIPTION:It’s a Blank Canvas Challenge!\nProgram Leaders: Dan Zimmermann and Kim Christensen\nUse pins and pinhole cameras to turn blank canvases into art with Dan and Kim. \nBefore the sewing machine\, humans stitched their own clothing. And before AI\, humans made their own images. Come learn how they did it from two old school masters. With images\, we will use our self-made pinhole cameras to turn a blank piece of photo paper into a negative\, which we will use to create a beautiful cyanotype print. With fabric\, we will use basic hand-sewing techniques to create wearable textiles from your blank canvas – a napkin\, a pillow\, a shirt.  We will provide the print supplies\, fabrics and threads\, and hand sewing tools – or bring your own. Let’s see what we can create!  \nKim Christensen has been a fiber artist for many years\, working with sewing\, knitting\, spinning\, natural plant dying\, and more. Photography has been Dan Zimmermann’s life-long avocation. He enjoys sharing what he has learned with all who are interested. \n

DESCRIPTION:[ DISCOUNT ] Let’s Build a Life-Size “Rube Goldberg”\nProgram Leaders: Bill Ballou and Susan Schwartz\nUse everyday objects and work with others to build a fun chain-reaction machine. \nThe famous cartoons by Rube Goldberg depicted machines doing simple things in unnecessarily convoluted ways\, something like the board game “Mousetrap.” We will\, as a group\, construct a life-size “Rube Goldberg machine” using available materials and a lot of imagination (as well as principles of physics)\, to create amazing chain reactions with everyday objects.  \nBill has a background in film\, TV and live theater construction\, rigging and problem solving starting in the early 1970’s.  He has been a construction coordinator on many feature films\, a technical director at REDCAT in Los Angeles and other theaters\, and taught Technical Direction at California Institute of the Arts School of Theater. The plan for this year includes (in addition to the usual items) tree planting\, cabin siding and painting\, cleaning\, window screening and glazing\, kiosk organizing\,  indoor and outdoor lighting\, deck and step repairs\, landscaping\, and firewood. Project teams may include painting\, carpentry\, plumbing\, electrical\, groundskeeping and spiffing up. Team leaders will offer guidance and instructions as we work together. Join us for the week and try something new! \nAlthough there will be no formal youth or children’s programs\, enthusiastic young workers are welcome. Mornings are spent on camp projects while afternoons provide time for hiking\, swimming\, sailing\, canoeing\, kayaking\, bird watching or just relaxing. In a conversational and interactive setting\, we’ll talk about houseplants\, garden plants\, organic pest control\, native plants\, new and emerging invasive species\, and whatever other topics are of interest to campers. \n  \nMJ is a former Master Gardener and has worked at an organic garden store in South Minneapolis for over 16 years.  She enjoys gardening of all kinds\, but is particularly fond of tropical houseplants and has been keeping\, propagating\, and killing them for 40+ years.  She specializes in remedies for garden and plant problems that are gentle on the environment\, and loves helping others solve their plant difficulties sustainably.

DESCRIPTION:  \nRestorative Justice and UU Life \nProgram Leadership: Lucy Moroukian\, Nelson Moroukian\, Angela Wilcox \nRestorative justice isn’t just for the justice system – it is used to nurture community\, provide for authentic inclusion and safety\, and offer all a sense of fairness in educational and congregational settings. This week\, we will practice deep listening\, learn about the roots of restorative justice in Indigenous culture\, and experience the power of being in circle\, de-centering the self. We will also learn the context and history of restorative justice in the US and discuss how these practices can serve as tools for healing rifts in our congregations and as antidotes to white supremacy and other forms of oppression. \n  \nAngela and Lucy serve as restorative culture specialists in educational communities. Each has worked to foster a restorative mindset in their approach to the world and building community. Nelson is the coordinator for Children and Family Ministries at Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul.

This will be a program of yoga and modern dance appropriate for beginners that will give the mind\, body\, and spirit a chance to connect internally as well as externally. We’ll explore a number of yoga moves and dance forms as we learn together. Sarah will meet you at your individual comfort level and help you find a personal connection to your expressive body\, mind\, and spirit!  \n  \nSarah is a choreographer\, yoga instructor\, and dance professor from Saint Paul\, Minnesota. She has been teaching movement for over 30 years at various venues. She grew up in California and has lived and worked in New York and Colorado.

Some of the topics we’ll explore include the history and archaeology of the National Forest and Reservation; the hydrological history of Cass Lake and the upper Mississippi River; the pre-European-settlement fire history on Star Island; and how archaeologists examine the past.  \n  \nSean is the archaeologist at the Chippewa National Forest and has spent most of his career pursuing archaeology in the north woods of Minnesota\, Michigan\, and Wisconsin.  His research examines the relationship between people\, their culture\, and their environment. Learn about and observe living things on land\, in water\, and in the air\, honing your observational skills in the company of others. We’ll also experience “forest bathing” in the silence of the woods. You might select a living thing and take the time to get to know it well: an unfolding plant\, a spider that you feed for the week\, or a butterfly larva that you observe and sketch every day. Or you might decide to observe a bird family as they go about raising a family. Then we’ll share what we’ve learned. \n  \nAnn has had a long and joy-filled career as a naturalist\, primarily in Minnesota\, but also in Sweden\, where she lived with her husband on his farm and was a nature and culture guide. They returned to Rochester\, Minnesota in 2019 and Ann became a Master Naturalist in all three of Minnesota’s biomes. Ann and Folke attend We are enthusiastic members of Rochester’s First UU Church.

The cosmos – near and far\, grand and mundane – invites us into relationships through languages and narratives we know by names like Astronomy\, Geology\, Archaeology\, and more.  How does – or could – these sciences deepen our spirituality?  This decidedly non-academic program will emphasize experiences\, friendly conversation\, a bit of show-and-tell\, writing\, reflection\, and humor. \n  \nPhil is a member of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis.  He is a lawyer by trade\, has been involved in LGBTQ advocacy for nearly 40 years\, and is a cat-lover\, a permanent history major\, a spiritual seeker\, and an avid journaler.

Through hands-on guidance and group activities\, you will develop better self-awareness and improve your ability to identify unconscious habits that are leading to pain and discomfort. Discover your potential for experiencing more mindful living through enhanced awareness\, improved posture\, and intentional everyday movements. \n  \nMorgan is a nationally certified Alexander Technique teacher and speaker. In 2013\, she created Center Studio in Atlanta to help others improve their quality of life through increased awareness and mindfulness. Since then\, she’s taught nationally and internationally\, helping individuals elevate their performance and recover from chronic pain\, injury\, stress\, and anxiety. Morgan focuses on building self-awareness\, self-confidence\, and poise through improving the overall function of mind\, body\, breath\, and voice. She grew up attending Camp UniStar each summer and looks forward to sharing UniStar’s magic with her family.

DESCRIPTION:Create a Book: Family Memories \n\nProgram Leader: Anne Brataas\nJune 22-27 (short week\, Saturday to Thursday)\nBring together favorite family stories to create a book of memories with the help of an experienced writer and facilitator. Your book can be small or large: the detailing of a long-remembered hike together; or a retelling of a trip with grandparents to where they grew up\, complete with a hand-drawn map or wisdom gleanings. It can be practical\, such as recipes associated with a memory\, or imaginary\, such as time traveling to meet ancestors or future generations.  \nIndividuals or groups of family members can work on a book. Anne will supply templates for making books and will guide discussions and reflections to help you bring stories to the surface. You will go home with handwritten and hand-drawn elements ready to be typed or digitized and saved for printing or emailing. If you wish\, you may bring a laptop or tablet to camp (WiFi isn’t available).

DESCRIPTION:DISCOUNT: Reduced fees this week\, plus Helping Hands Week campers may register for just a portion of the week. Helpings Hands registrants may also register for a second week at camp at the same time they register for Helping Hands Week. \nWe’ll have a variety of Helping Hands projects for campers of all ages and abilities – no experience needed! Projects may include painting\, carpentry\, plumbing\, electrical\, groundskeeping\, and lots of cabin/camp spiffing up. Team leaders will offer guidance and instruction as we work together. This year’s major objective is sprucing up our restrooms with new sinks\, floors\, painting\, and more! We will also have new mattresses to deploy. Depending on the skill levels of participants\, we’d like to replace the back stairs of Cabin 2 and the old siding on the east side of the lodge upstairs. Join us for the week and learn a new skill. \nThis week there are no formal youth or children’s programs\, but young people interested in learning skills and helping out are welcome. Mornings are spent on camp projects while afternoons provide time for hiking\, swimming\, sailing\, canoeing\, kayaking\, bird watching or just relaxing. Join the UniStar Helping Hands crew to participate in projects that will benefit camp\, and make friendships and memories to cherish forever!
