The Story of Star Island: Biology and Geology Through the Ages

June 20 - June 27
The Story of Star Island: Biology and Geology Through the Ages
Program Leader: Karen Noyce and Art Norton

Discover Star Island’s living and ancient history through hands-on field exploration of geology, biology, and wildlife.

Explore the living and ancient world of Star Island through hands-on field adventures in geology and biology. Birds will be singing on their territories, forests will be regrowing after last year’s massive blowdown, and the landforms, beach stones, and plant communities will reveal stories of the island’s past and present. Together, we will uncover the hidden stories of how nature works and how landscapes evolve.

Karen spent 33 years researching black bear ecology with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Grand Rapids. Art worked for many years as Itasca County’s Soil and Water District Manager and later with The Nature Conservancy, helping establish “Working Forest Easements’’ on large tracts of industrial forest lands in northern Minnesota.
