Our family has attended Camp UniStar since 1985. Our first year, we stayed in cabin 5 with Susan and Fritz Franzen (sailing leader). For years, I was a regular 6:30 am walker with Helen Thompson, the camp Director. We migrated from cabins/lodge to tent city in 1991 at the suggestion of Mark and Brenda Wiger, whom we met at camp and who have become members of our extended family. We have been coming to camp and vacationing with the Wigers ever since. Our son, Sam, was on staff in the early 2000’s when Mike Schwab was Director. Since 2017, we have shared our tent with our granddaughter, Ivy. We have 3 other grandchildren in the pipeline. My wife, Barbara, and I have three other children, Ben, Anne, and Ellie. They have all come to camp. I grew up in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Our home was a twenty-two-minute walk through the woods from Walden Pond. The North Woods of Minnesota always reminds me of. Once we leave Motley, I feel as if I am home. I have been a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) since 1980. I started attending UU churches in Madison in February 1977, four months prior to Sam’s birth. I have taught Sunday School and served as a Trust Fund Trustee and a member of our Finance, Generosity, and Property Committees and COVID-19 Task Force. I am an infectious diseases specialist. I received my medical degree at the University of Rochester (NY) followed by internal medicine residency in Madison, and infectious diseases fellowship training at the CDC and at the University of Illinois-Chicago. I retired from Christie Clinic in January 2020, after 38.5 years. Upon returning from a vacation in February, I volunteered at Heart of Mary Medical Center, my medical home. I have been working there, part-time, since May 2022. In addition to being a Board member, my UniStar service included assisting with an outbreak of norovirus and advice about swimmer’s itch and Lyme disease. In 2020, I received a call from Oliver Gross asking me if I would consider following him on the UniStar Board of Directors.
